Horror and suspense in a Parisian suburb, with a surprising dénouement. In the Netherlands, Clouzot's spicy tale was met with moral indignation. 'Well made, but unhealthy entertainment,' wrote the critic of the Katholieke Film Actie (Catholic Film Action). An American remake of the film was made in 1996, with Isabelle Adjani and Sharon Stone in the original roles of Simone Signoret and Vera Clouzot.
