EYE restorations selected for Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna
EYE will be contributing more than fifty films to the 26th edition of the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy (23 to 30 June). As in the past editions, numerous films from EYE’s Jean Desmet Collection will be screened within the Hundred Years Ago section, curated by Mariann Lewinsky.
This year’s festival will also be paying a tribute to Peter Delpeut, emeritus artistic director of EYE (at the time the Nederlands Filmmuseum) who made the found footage compilation film Lyrical Nitrate (1991) that was entirely inspired by the Desmet Collection.
A very special Dutch contribution to this year’s festival are the short Dollywood commercials. Headed by Joop Geesink, Dollywood was an internationally operating Dutch production company in the 1950s which made theatrical ad films for major clients like Campari, Knorr and Ballantines. EYE Collection Specialist Leenke Ripmeester will present the films and talk about the preservation project carried out by EYE in the past couple of years.
Within the Lois Weber tribute, the recent digital restoration of Shoes (1916) will be screened again this year; the world premiere of this restored version took place at the Il Cinema Ritrovato 2011.
Finally Komedie om geld (1936), a film made by emigrant director Max Ophüls during his short stay in the Netherlands while on the run from the Nazi regime, will be screened within the section dedicated to the Financial Crisis of 1929, the Wall Street Crash.
