Eye has a strong position in the academic field. In recent years it has succeeded in significantly expanding its academic activities, partly thanks to the establishment of the Chair in Film Heritage and Digital Film Culture at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
This chair is held by Giovanna Fossati, chief curator at Eye. Her dual role as professor and chief curator is exceptional within the international world of film archives, forming a perfect link between the restoration work at Eye and the academic research at the UvA. Through its academic policy, Eye wants to offer scholars and students optimal access to the collection and expertise within the film archive.
Collaboration with the UvA focuses on the Master’s programme Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image, the annual Eye International Conference, the series of public lectures entitled This is Film! Film Heritage in Practice, and the series of academic publications entitled Framing Film. Eye and UvA also jointly participate in various national and international research projects that focus on the application of innovative methods of restoring, digitizing and providing access to the collection. An example is the Digital Humanities research project entitled Data Driven Film History: A demonstrator of Eye's Jean Desmet Collection, funded by NWO, in which a demonstration tool has been developed to visualize the programming and distribution patterns of films from the collection of Jean Desmet.
