Program EYE International Conference 2018 online
How can audio-visual collections be mobilized for the common good? How can preservationists, curators and programmers be trained to achieve this goal? In May 2018, the EYE International Conference will explore answers to these and other questions, in a programme entitled Activating the Archive. Audio-Visual Collections and Civic Engagement, Political Dissent and Societal Change.
The annual EYE International Conference explores contemporary archival and academic debates, catering to film heritage professionals, scholars, archivists, curators and restorers. This year, more than fifty speakers from around the globe will represent this diverse community of professionals.
The program will consist of such panels as ‘Images of Dissent and Countercultural Collections’, ‘Resistant Archives and Archival Activism’, and ‘Absences and Diversity in Archival Collections and the Profession’, as well as roundtable discussions on ‘Pedagogy Against the Grain’ and ‘Activating Audio Collections’.
Each conference day will begin with a compilation of short films from the EYE collection and conclude with special film screenings in the evening (titles t.b.c.).
The program will feature three invited keynote lecturers: Prof. dr. Thomas Elsaesser, Professor Emeritus of Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam, Prof. dr. Faye Ginsburg, Professor of Social Anthropology at New York University, and Prof. dr. Julia Noordegraaf, Professor of Digital Heritage at the University of Amsterdam.
The EYE International Conference 2018 will also celebrate the 15-year anniversary of the MA programme in Preservation & Presentation of the Moving Image (P&P) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), whose approximately 150 alumni are active in museums, archives and universities around the world. EYE, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and the Living Media Arts (LIMA) are partners in the programme offered at UvA. The conference will be an occasion for P&P alumni to reconnect, and for students and staff of audio-visual archiving and curation programmes worldwide to get in touch and reflect together on past and future endeavours.
The EYE International Conference 2018 will take place at EYE from Saturday 26 May to Tuesday 29 May 2018. Attendees are also invited to the EYE Collection Day, highlighting recent projects from the EYE collection, on Saturday 26 May.
This year’s EYE International Conference is organized by EYE Filmmuseum in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Institute of Sound and Vision.
