50 jaar Paradiso

The fiftieth anniversary of the May revolt of 1968 coincides with yet another memorable event: the fiftieth anniversary of Paradiso in Amsterdam, which first opened its doors under the name of ‘Cosmic Relaxation Centre' on 30 March 1968. Fifty years of youth culture captured on film, from hippie to punk to grunge to acid, from a youth centre wafting with marijuana and pulsing with the anarchic art of the Stads Kunst Guerilla Party to a professionally run pop temple, it’s all there in a wild mix of footage, including legendary performances by Nirvana and De Staat and film fragments from Cha-Cha (1979) and Rebellious City (2015). Pop journalist and Paradiso chronicler Hester Carvalho talks with guests in between.
