Cinedans - Inside Opera de Paris

FOR A MOMENT | FR | 2016 | 9’

Director: CLÉMENCE POÉSY

Observed through a succession of close-ups, Clémence Poésy captures the tireless work of the Opéra de Paris ballet dancers as they train. Poésy produces a captivating insight through her original use of gaze - leaving the bodies with which they train out of frame. In capturing the intimacy of their faces, she explores the mystery of their hard earned quest toward grace.

RESET | FR | 2016 | 110’

Director: THIERRY DEMAIZIÈRE, ALBAN TEURLAI - Choreographer: BENJAMIN MILLEPIED

Benjamin Millepied, known for choreographing the Oscar nominated film Black Swan, performed as the first male soloist at the New York City Ballet for over 20 years. In 2015, he returned to France to lead the seasoned Paris Opera. He encounters an institution that seems to be stuck in the traditions of classical ballet from decades ago. His efforts to reform this institution do not go smoothly.

Reset follows Millepied during the creation of the first choreography he made for 16 young dancers of the main core, consequently forgoing a few important soloists of the company. The costumes were made by the Dutch designer Iris van Herpen. A beautifully shot, honest report of an unfeasible battle against institutions. But the joy of dancing remains central for Millepied, despite the odds.
