SURRENDER

BE/UK | 2017 | 158’ [première NL]

Director: PHIL GRIFFIN - Choreographer: JAN FABRE & DANSERS

Jan Fabre is known to be one of the most innovative and diverse artists of his generation. Over the past 30 years he established himself as writer, director, choreographer and visual artist. His work is often controversial. Phil Griffin was one of the first male dancers in Fabre’s dance company Troubleyn. After his career as a dancer, he built a successful career as creative director and photographer.

He worked together with Prince, Amy Winehouse, Rihanna and John Bon Jovi. In 2015, Griffin returned to Troubleyn as artist in residence. With just one single camera, he followed the intense creation of one of the most radical contemporary theatre projects: Fabre’s Mount Olympus: To glorify the cult of tragedy – a 24 hour theater marathon with 27 actors on stage.

The documentary Surrender follows Fabre, alone in his studio and at practice with his dancers. Going by Fabre’s artistic vision as artist, playwright and tutor, the movie offers a serene and intimate view of the human body.

Surrender is being presented in collaboration with  Troubleyn/Jan Fabre, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam and Julidans.
