Cinemini: The Gruffalo
The Gruffalo is a story about a little mouse looking for food. While he searching he encounters several animals that think he’d be a nice bite to eat himself. The mouse invents a scary animal, ‘the Gruffalo’, to keep the animals at bay.
The mouse thinks up a big beast with prickles on his back, huge fangs and a wart on its nose. The little mouse manages to frighten the animals with this imaginary Gruffalo. But then the Gruffalo really does turn up. As the monster is about to eat him, the mouse tells him he is the scariest animal in the forest. The Gruffalo, however, is not impressed by the mouse and agrees to take a walk in the forest with him. There they meet all kinds of animals that are terrified of seeing the Gruffalo and run off. The monster realizes the mouse is right: he really is the scariest animal in the forest. The Gruffalo, too, panics and runs off. He bumps into a tree, and a nut falls out. It’s exactly what the mouse was looking for: a bit of food.
The film is based on the children’s book of the same name. The story of the mouse and the Gruffalo is told by a quiet narrator’s voice. It’s the voice of a mother squirrel telling her children a bedtime story. The vocabulary is simple and the rhyme flows easily, as it does in the book.
