De erfenis

Daan van der Elsken, son of the renowned photographer Ed van der Elsken, is the subject of this documentary, in which his friend Joris Postema follows Daan as he reconstructs his troubled relationship with his father. Postema had access to a great deal of van der Elsken home movie footage.

Watch the film online:

Daan’s life resembles that of other vulnerable artists’ children who grew up in the shadow of their parents’ fame. The outside world does not regard them as autonomous beings but constantly judges their achievements against those of their fathers or mothers.

Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) often focused his camera on his son Daan: films like Welkom in het leven, lieve kleine (Welcome to Life, Little One) and the sequel he made in the eighties revolve around van der Elsken’s son. Nowadays Daan is suffering from a depression and partly blames his problems on his troubled relationship with the larger-than-life personality of his father Ed.

defiant son

Joris Postema follows Daan on his own personal quest. Gradually it transpires that the son is more like his father than he himself had assumed in his defiance, egoism and competitiveness. Daan regularly tries to take control of the film and the making of it puts his friendship with Joris to the test.

This premiere ties in with the programme The films of Ed van der Elsken – Camera in Love in EYE. A collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
