Part of King Hu

Dragon Inn

King Hu is a master of martial arts cinema. The Taiwan Film Institute has recently restored three major works by King Hu, now screened for the first time in all their glory at EYE.

Dragon Inn was an immediate box office hit and of major influence on cinema. King Hu broke with the stereotyping of the female characters. He also introduced numerous wuxia genre archetypes, such as the eunuch and the sword fighter. The dazzling film is set during the Ming dynasty in 1457, with eunuchs occupying positions of power at court. Hu gives us the bloody consequences of their corrupt and insidious practices in an innovative martial arts form. Hu broke through internationally with his highly stylized and tautly choreographed Dragon Inn. In 2003 Dragon Inn served as the backdrop to Tsai Ming-liang's Goodbye, Dragon Inn. Hu’s film is screened in an old cinema that is about to close down. The sparkling restoration of Dragon Inn was previously presented at the Cannes Film Festival.
