Ed van der Elsken & Amsterdam

Born in Amsterdam, Ed van der Elsken worked all around the world, but he liked recording the dynamic atmosphere of the Dutch capital and his own life there on film and in photographs. Part of a programme to accompany the van der Elsken tribute in the Stedelijk Museum.

Een fotograaf filmt Amsterdam (A Photographer films Amsterdam) (NL 1982) 58’

In the summer of 1982 Van der Elsken traversed Amsterdam on foot, by car and by airplane to document his native city and its residents. With a camera mounted to a rollbar on his Mini Moke buggy, he filmed the centre of town in slow motion and accelerated the footage when he edited the film. A colourful parade of Amsterdammers walks by, playfully challenged by the photographer who knows how to draw out punkers, the elderly, buskers, Hell’s Angels and tramps. The voice-over is vintage van der Elsken.

Het Waterlooplein verdwijnt (Waterloo Square is disappearing)
(NL 1967) 12’

An impression of the last day of the old flea market on Amsterdam’s Waterlooplein, which had to be moved due to the construction of the IJ Tunnel. Van der Elsken filmed the traders, the buyers and the motley range of items for sale, from Che Guevara posters to household goods well past their prime. He commented on what he filmed without holding back.

The films are shown on 16mm and are part of EYE’s collection.

With an introduction by Fred Feddes (journalist and publicist), author of 1000 jaar Amsterdam.

With special thanks to Anneke Hilhorst and Han Hogeland
