Eyeshadow: Donnie Darko & Jo Goes Hunting
Eyeshadow brings you cool, offbeat and thrilling films followed by live performances in the bar area. This month the weird Donnie Darko, in which a man in a rabbit suit predicts the end of the world, followed by Jo Goes Hunting, supplier of surrealist indie rock.
First a film, then a live show in IJlounge: every month Eyeshadow selects a high-profile modern classic with a striking soundtrack.
A mysterious SF drama that gets under your skin. The year is 1988 and the tormented teenager Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the only one who knows the world will end in 28 days. Donnie’s life takes a bizarre turn when one night he is woken up by a Frank, a man dressed in a rabbit suit, who tells him the world will end in exactly 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. This piece of information leads to one surrealist event after the other, shattering Donnie’s grip on reality.
Richard Kelly was only 26 years old and not yet graduated from the Film Academy when he directed his debut. All the same he managed to attract stars like Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze. The director gave a prominent place to the gloomy eighties music of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Church and Joy Division.
jo goes hunting
No better band to throw fact and fiction off kilter than Jo Goes Hunting, the band of multi-instrumentalist Jimmi Jo Hueting. Using synthesizers, spacey guitars, and a growling drawl, he creates a magic and dreamlike sound far beyond the 4/4 metre of common sense. Jo Goes Hunting was support act to Dutch alternative rock band De Staat and will be touring the clubs of Hamburg, London, Cologne and Berlin this year.
