Imagine - Les Affamés

As a zombie film Les Affamés may tell a familiar story, it's also a stylish, unusually moving addition to the genre canon.

Quebec, the future. After a zombie plague, people who have lost their loved ones are individually wandering the vast forests in order to escape the living dead. When they start to form a group, they make a plan to flee to safety. As a zombie film Les Affamés may tell a familiar story, it's also a stylish, unusually moving addition to the genre canon.

What makes this film standout is its style, with long sequences of silence, the use of vast, empty spaces in the Canadian forests and a focus on characters, who all contemplate the loved ones they just lost. In that respect this is more a film of grief than an exercise in fear. Although the zombies are of course flesh eaters and their shrill cries are terrifying enough.

The cast is terrific throughout and the script deliberately steers clear from a three act narrative. A hypnotically beautiful, wonderfully humanist and gut-wrenching (rather than gut-churning) zombie film – who would have thought?
