Jan Svankmajer: Between Film and Fine Art

Bertrand Schmitt, a member of the surrealist group in Prague, is personally close to Jan Švankmajer and has extensive knowledge of his work. In conversation with film programmer Ludmila Cvikova, Schmitt makes a journey through the films, works of art and texts by Švankmajer, followed by the film Insect.

Although Jan Švankmajer is these days widely known and acknowledged as one of the most original and authentic international artists, many aspects of his life and work have still remained untouched and unexplored. The study Dimensions of Dialogue/Between Film and Fine Art (2012) by Bertrand Schmitt and Frantisek Dryje aimed to fill that gap. In a set of articles and essays illuminated with rich visuals, they sought to describe a wonderfully rich and coherent, distinctive and unique universe of the artist.

Co-author Bertrand Schmitt, a member of the Prague surrealist group who is personally close to Jan Svankmajer and is an expert of his work, will visit Eye Filmmuseum to share his vision of Jan Svankmajer’s world and creative work and share his extensive knowledge of the impressive personal and creative qualities of this exceptional artist and filmmaker.

Through a rapid journey amongst Svankmajer’s films, artworks and texts, Schmitt's presentation will try to show several interconnections between them in order to explain the transmutation of senses that Jan Svankmajer is looking for.

Bertrand Schmitt is a French poet, film director and essayist. He wrote and collaborated on several monographs and catalogues about Jan Švankmajer. As a film director, he wrote and directed several documentary films on Czech poets or artists and on surrealism.
