Monterey Pop

A legendary direct cinema documentary covering the world’s first major pop festival: the Monterey International Pop Festival, which unfolded during a sunny weekend in Monterey, California. With unforgettable performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Who and many others.

Pete Townshend hurling away his guitar, Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar, Janis Joplin as a roaring lioness on stage wowing the crowd, happy hippies shouting: 'It will be a love-in ... like Easter, Christmas and your birthday all at once!' – this enthralling pop festival film is loaded with legendary footage. Also starring Otis Redding, the Mamas and the Papas, The Who, Ravi Shankar, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Byrds.

a new era

One fine June weekend in 1967 at the beginning of the Summer of Love, the Monterey International Pop Festival heralded a new era in pop music. Using his characteristic direct cinema style, D. A. Pennebaker immortalised all the glorious moments together with his camera crew, which included illustrious names like Albert Maysles and Richard Leacock.

Introduction by Jonathan Gill.
