Nostalgia for the Absolute

Multidisciplinary tribute to the work of Andrei Tarkovsky created by his son Andrei A. Tarkovsky, in close collaboration with Duo Gazzana and a special contribution by actor Thom Hoffman. Duo Gazzana plays pieces by Tarkovsky's favorite composer Johann Sebastian Bach, interspersed with works by Messiaen, Pärt and Slivestrov. Thom Hoffman recites from Tarkovsky's renowned book Sculpting in Time, and from poems by father Arseni Tarkovsky. Andrei A. Tarkovsky presents an elaborate live remix of video projections - scenes from Tarkovsky’s films and imagery from the private family archive.

The performance alternates readings from Sculpting in Time, Tarkovsky’s autobiographical opus on aesthetics and the theory of cinema, and from the poetry of his father Arseni Tarkovsky (1907 – 1989), with musical performance by sisters Natascia Gazzana, violin, and Raffaella Gazzana, piano. The artistic direction is by Andrei A. Tarkovsky, whose video projections run throughout the performance, comprising of scenes from his father’s films plus previously unpublished images and documents from family archives.
