One Plus One

‘A militant Maoist’, is how the director of Breathless referred to himself in 1968. Looking for new inspiration, Jean-Luc Godard sided with the protest generation. In One Plus One he turned his camera on the Rolling Stones as they were recording the dark ‘Sympathy for the Devil’, intercutting the footage with the fictitious story of a group of young revolutionaries in Paris. Marx, Bakunin, Mao, Black Power, Che Guevara: the pantheon of the sixties in moving image, sound and text.
