Panel - Eye on Romanian Cinema

Since the emergence of the New Wave movement twenty years ago, Romanian cinema has seen a spectacular development: a new film industry, numerous awards, international recognition and innovative form experiments. Key representatives of the new Romanian cinema talk about its recent history, successes achieved and the future.

Speakers:

Corina Suteu is cultural advisor, former Culture minister of Romania, founder and chair of Making Waves, New York: New Romanian Cinema and fARAD - International Documentary Film Festival. She was also curator of the Insula 42 art gallery in Bucharest.

Bianca Oana is producer of the Golden Bear winner Touch Me Not and of Collective, Alexander Nanau's documentary also screening at Eye.

Dana Bunescu is editor and sound designer of such films as 4 Months, 3 Weeks & Two Days and The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu, both screened at Eye. She received the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution for Ana, mon amour (2017) at the Berlin Film Festival. She is the sound designer of all of Radu Jude’s films, three of which are screened by Eye.

Dominique Nasta is Professor in Film Studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and author of numerous books, including Contemporary Romanian Cinema: The History of an Unexpected Miracle (2013).

Irina Trocan is a film critic and lecturer in Film Studies and Screenwriting in Bucharest, editor of Romanian Cinema Inside Out: Perspectives on Film Culture, Industry and Politics, EUROPALIA-ROMANIA 1912-2019. She has published in film magazines such as Close Up, Sight & Sound, Cineaste, MUBI, IndieWire and Photogénie.
