Performance

Nicholas Roeg’s directing debut presents the hippie culture of the late 1960s as an unsettling world of sex, violence, drugs and hallucinations. Shot in May 1968, but only released years later due to British censorship problems.

The gang world of James Fox and the dream world of the conceited, bored and hedonistic rock star Mick Jagger collide in Roeg’s film. Chas, a violent gangster, is looking for a place to hide and finds it in the commune led by Turner (Mick Jagger), a faded rock star. The surrealist developments eventually lead to an identity switch.

Performance was finished in 1968, but was only released by Warner Bros two years later after heavy cutting.
