Restored & Unseen: Sansho the Bailiff

Hardly ever screened in cinemas nowadays: Sansho the Bailiff by the Japanese master filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi. This epic on the suffering, ambition and eventual decline of two aristocratic families in the eleventh century (the Heian Era) is at the same time a meditation on the passing of time and the meaning of tradition. The screening on 9 December will be introduced by Professor Ivo Smits (Leiden University).

4K restoration, carried out by the Kadokawa Corporation and The Film Foundation in collaboration with The Japan Foundation.
