Symphonic Cinema Presents: The Firebird
A film made to the rhythm of Stravinsky’s classic masterpiece, with the orchestra subsequently performing the same work live to accompany the screening of the film. This is the concept underlying Lukas van Woerkum’s Symphonic Cinema. The Conservatorium van Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jacob Slagter performs Stravinsky’s The Firebird to Van Woerkum’s film of the same name, starring top actors Gijs Scholten van Aschat and Hannah Hoekstra in the lead roles.
Van Woerkum based his magical realistic film on Stravinsky’s famous ballet score L'oiseau de feu, a tale about Koschei, a lonely emperor in his castle.
Following his wife’s death Koschei mainly lives in his memories and is waited on by enchanted servants. Koschei’s neglected daughter cannot cope with the situation and uses her magical powers to make Koschei face his past.
Van Woerkum secured well-known actors Gijs Scholten van Aschat and Hannah Hoekstra for his contemporary interpretation of Stravinsky’s orchestral work. Also starring Willem Voogd and Elise Caluwaerts in supporting roles.
Van Woerkum made his film in 2015 on behalf of the Concertgebouworkest; for the screening he edited the footage live using his iPad: the director followed the conductor instead of the other way round.
Prior to The Firebird, the short Dutch silent film De dood van Pierrot (The Death of Pierrot, Theo Frenkel sr, 1920) will be screened, accompanied by pianist Daan van den Hurk.
