The Best of Imagine - Ruben Brandt, Collector

Great animation and fast- paced action go hand in hand in this highly entertaining ode to film and art.

Psychiatrist Ruben Brandt is haunted by the famous paintings that pop up in his nightmares. With the help of female master thief Mimi he manages to 'collect' them. Their actions are closely followed by private eye Mike, while other shady figures are along for the ride. Great animation and fast-paced action go hand in hand in this highly entertaining ode to film and art.

First feature by Slovenia-born, Budapest-based director Milorad Krstić has stylish 2D and 3D animation and loads of art and movie references on offer. It plays like an outrageous 60's caper movie (Pink Panther, Topkapi), heavily sprinkled with some modern-day Mission Impossible flavour. Besides the painters whose works visit Brandt in his nightmares, a lot of others are paid homage to in the design of the characters (Cubism) and the backgrounds (De Chirico, Hopper). Bravely ambitious, highly original, intellectually stimulating, this relentlessly paced animated action movie fully deserves its 100% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
