Heimat 1: Eine deutsche Chronik

13 through 16 May 2016

The restoration of one of the greatest of German post-war films, Edgar Reitz’s family chronicle Heimat (English subtitled) about the villagers living in the fictitious hamlet Schabbach, took no less than four years to complete.

EYE releases the digital restoration of episode 1 (1984) of this magnum opus to theatres across the country. During Whitsun weekend, EYE will be screening all seven episodes in a fifteen-hour marathon session with Q&A after part 4 with director Edgar Reitz on Sunday May 15th.

Heimat offers a unique opportunity  to get an insight into the twentieth-century history of Germany and Europe. The fortunes of the Simon family will be screened in EYE on Whitsun weekend. We watch Maria grow up from a 17-year-old into an old woman. The screening in EYE is with English subtitles; the film will then tour the national theatres with Dutch subtitles. The film’s distributor Lumière has published a DVD Box to mark the re-release of Heimat.
