Previously Unreleased

12 July - 27 September 2018

This summer Eye Filmmuseum puts a number of films in the spotlight that were selected for major international festivals but were not released in the Netherlands, and for no good reason as we believe. Ten of these are screened under the heading Previously Unreleased – with actors like Kirsten Dunst, Ethan Hawke and Pilou Asbaek in outstanding roles. The premiere screenings in Eye and the Filmhallen will be introduced by journalists of Dutch film monthly De Filmkrant.

Selected from a range of films screened at international festivals, the ten titles demonstrate the diversity of international arthouse films. This year’s programme includes the latest productions by Paul Schrader and Kate and Laura Mulleavy (of Rodarte fashion fame).

The films in Previously Unreleased take the viewer from a church minister’s nocturnal whiskey sessions to the Canadian permafrost, where reels of films lay hidden for years. They take you from a crumbling Olympic village in Athens to a remote part of Patagonia where a lawyer wants to be a king. A striking feature of many of these films is their outspoken style: occasionally raw, surrealist or psychedelic, but always mesmerizing, like Winter BrothersReyWoodshock and Dawson City: Frozen Time.
