A Serious Man
Ethan Coen, Joel Coen / US, FR, GB, 2009 / 106 min.
The Coen Brothers’ most personal film is a bitter-melancholy reminiscence on their Jewish childhoods as well as a comedy about life’s meaninglessness. The eponymous ‘serious man’ is a Jewish physics professor trying to undergo his trials and tribulations with humility.

Larry Gopnik (the amazing Michael Stuhlbarg) is a soft-spoken, Jewish physics professor in Minnesota in 1967. His marriage is on the rocks, his children alienated from him, his brother is a pain, their is gossip at work as well as incessant phone calls from a mail order record company. Larry keeps hope alive, despite the his Old-Testament trials and tribulations: this modern day Job tries to be a conscientious, serious man without, however, being heroic.
