About Eye

Cinema version of Part 5 of Kieslowski’s TV series Dekalog about the Ten Commandments. Layabout Jacek breaks the fifth commandment, 'thou shalt not kill', by killing a cab driver. Kieslowski makes you wonder whether Jacek’s death sentence is as pointless as the killing itself.

Jacek, a young Pole in Warsaw hails a cab and gets in. Not long after, he kills the driver Waldemar for no apparent reason. What motivated Jacek is unclear, he might not even have a motive.

A Short Film About Killing

Filip, a factory worker, buys an 8mm camera and films the birth of his daughter. He soon becomes addicted to the magic of film, which has consequences for his family. Amator represents Kieslowski’s international breakthrough, a year before the Solidarity strikes in Gdansk.

At the close of the 1970s, Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941 - 1996) had made a name for himself as a documentary filmmaker and director of short dramas for Polish TV. The Warsaw-born filmmaker sought to portray post-war Poland as accurately as possible within the constraints imposed by the censors. To avoid conflict with the Communist party Kieslowski developed a film style that was both concrete and poetic.

Amator

Kieslowski’s take on Poland under the state of emergency announced after the Gdansk port strike led by Lech Walesa. Translator Ulla mourns the death of her husband Antek, a lawyer defending the foreman of a strike.

While working on a translation of one of George Orwell’s novels Ulla suddenly loses her husband Antek to a heart attack. He was a passionate lawyer who had taken on the case of a young strike foreman resisting Jaruzelski’s repressive regime.

No End

His successful films La double vie de Véronique as well as his Trois couleurs trilogy featuring French stars Irène Jacob, Juliette Binoche and Julie Delpy revolve around kinship, identity and coincidence.
