Tonight a focus on some of the big screen’s most memorable alcoholics with feature film The Verdict (1982), in which juicer lawyer Frank (Paul Newman) loses his grip on his career and his life.

The first hour is devoted to classic alcoholic characters in film: from Een dagje naar het strand (1984), Shaolin Soccer (2001) to Barfly (1987). Never before was a boozy guy so perfectly lighted as was Mickey Rourke by DOP Robby Müller in Barfly. In Sidney Lumet’s The Verdict (1982), tonight’s feature film, a has-been lawyer takes on two distinguished medical doctors. Serious mistakes were made during a routine operation, as a result of which a pregnant woman has fallen into a coma. Lawyer Frank Galvin (Paul Newman) refuses to settle and sues the widely respected hospital, which is also associated with a powerful archdiocese. But then Frank takes to drinking, losing his grip on his career and his life.

How often do you still get the chance to see Bad Lieutenant (1992), Young Frankenstein (1974) or Darkman (1990) on the big screen at your favourite cinema? Rarely or never, as even the most hardcore film buff will have to admit. That’s why it’s a good thing to have filmmaker and VPRO presenter Martin Koolhoven and Eye programmer Ronald Simons, film specialists out of cinephile necessity, join forces.

After an extensive interview with Belgian filmmaker Harry Kümel a screening of the 4K restoration of Daughters of Darkness (1971).

He was already their guest in a Cinema OT301 show presented by Koolhoven and Simons in 2010. Ten years later, Belgian filmmaker Harry Kümel is back for more: in the first hour of tonight’s show, Martin Koolhoven will be interviewing him about his oeuvre, showing many clips and the 16mm short De eekhoorn (1972) from Eye’s collection. The interview is followed by the 4K restoration of the vampire film Les lèvres rouges, the cult classic which is also known as Daughters of Darkness (1971). The remarkable Belgian film director Harry Kümel made his feature film debut in 1968. Monsieur Hawarden tells the story of a wealthy Austrian woman who disguises herself as a man to avoid prosecution. His lesbian vampire film Les lèvres rouges (1971) grew into a cult film. Legendary filmmaker Orson Welles was willing to play a role in his Malpertuis (1971-1973). Surrealism and a bizarre romanticism are hallmarks of Kümel’s oeuvre. He lectured at the Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam for many years, counting Martin Koolhoven and Mike van Diem among his students. Nederlands
