Als de kraanvogels overvliegen (The Cranes Are Flying)

Michail Kalatozov / SUHH, 1957 / 96 min.

A young couple become separated when the Germans invade the Soviet Union. He joins up and is sent to the front – but what does the war mean for those left at home? Michail Kalatozov’s poignant tale of love in wartime won a Golden Palm at Cannes in 1959.

With the war in Ukraine and harsh repression meted out by Putin, Russia seems to be returning to the dictatorial era of Stalin, with a contemporary twist. Unlike in the late 1950s and early ’60s, when Nikita Khrushchev created space for political reforms, and the cultural climate became (relatively) more liberal – a period known as 'the Thaw'.
