David McVicar directs this breath-taking new production of Umberto Giordano”s drama of passion, freedom and love against the backdrop of the French Revolution. Andrea Chénier is a fictionalized account of the last years of the French poet who ended his life on the guillotine in 1794.Jonas Kaufmann plays the lead role of Chénier and sings three magnificent arias. The Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings the role of Chénier”s beloved Maddalena, including the moving aria La mamma morta, which was also a great favourite of Maria Callas.
