Banana Pancakes and the Children of Sticky Rice
Daan Veldhuizen / NL, LA, 2015 / 93 min.
When backpackers arrive in a small village in Laos their presence appears to have a disruptive effect on the lives of locals. The two childhood friends, Khao and Shai, try to make use of the possibilities brought by the arrival of the tourists, but they are unaware of the consequences it might have both for the village and for their friendship. The documentary enables us to critically engage with the implications of the tourist industry for the locals of a small community.

Banana Pancakes and the Children of Sticky Rice is an intriguing documentary directed by a young Dutch filmmaker Daan Veldhuizen that premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It”s a complex East-meets-West story, told in an equally rich and confrontational film language. (Cinema Delicatessen)
