Belle de jour
Luis Buñuel / FR, IT, 1967 / 101 min.
Reissue of this Buñuel classic, now in a high-quality 4K restoration. Catherine Deneuve plays Séverine, a not unhappily married bourgeois woman who signs up to work at a high-end brothel in Paris. Her prim and proper husband, a medical man, knows nothing about this. Deneuve runs the entire film with her superb, nonchalant acting.

Luis Buñuel perfected Catherine Deneuve's image in 1967. In Belle de jour she plays a timid, happily married Parisian doctor's wife, dressed in Yves St. Laurent, who prostitutes herself in a brothel to fulfil her masochistic desires. She returns home every afternoon at five o'clock strictly.
