Beyond Sleep + Souvenir uit Afrika
1 September 2021 marks one hundred years since the birth of writer and polemist W.F. Hermans was born. Eye is joining the celebrations to mark this by screening all film versions of Hermans’ work by Dutch directors, including Boudewijn Koole’s adaptation of Nooit meer slapen (1966), Beyond Sleep.
Alfred hopes the meteorite will help him become a famous scientist; but in both book and film it remains elusive, like the aerial photos of the rugged Finnmark landscape which blind Professor Nummedal is keeping back – at least, so the slightly paranoid Alfred believes. He also feels chronically uneasy alongside the much more sporty Norwegians on the expedition.
