In the devastating first part of Kieślowski’s trilogy, Juliette Binoche in a dazzling display of acting ability plays a woman who sees her life from a different perspective after the tragic death of her husband and young daughter. Winner of a Golden Lion in Venice.

This year, distributor Cherry Pickers will release four digitally (4K) restored films by Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941 - 1996) (4K): La double vie de Véronique (1991) and the Trois couleurs trilogy (1993/1994) inspired by the colours of the French flag. The three episodes entitled Bleu, Blanc and Rouge are subtle, associative meditations on the core values of the French Revolution: freedom, equality and brotherhood. Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy and Irène Jacob play the female leads. In Trois couleurs: Bleu, Binoche plays a woman who has lost her child and composer husband in a car crash.
Julie tries to start over, far from her estate and would-be lover, but soon discovers unpleasant facts about her husband’s life. Julie slowly learns how to live again thanks to the music that continues to surround her.

Kieslowski’s early masterpiece shows us various, chance-determined outcomes for a human life. Witek runs after a train. Using this ordinary event, Kieslowski outlines three possible outcomes for the medical student’s life.

Kieslowski shot his first metaphysical masterpiece, Blind Chance, before he made a name for himself with the epic Dekalog series of films and the Trois couleurs trilogy. The captivating drama shows how difficult it is to reconcile political ideals with personal happiness. Witek (the magnetic Bogusław Linda) is a medical student with an insecure future in communist Poland. Kieslowski dramatizes Witek’s life journey as a series of different opportunities, thereby suggesting that our lives are just as controlled by chance as they are by so-called freedom of choice.

His successful films La double vie de Véronique as well as his Trois couleurs trilogy featuring French stars Irène Jacob, Juliette Binoche and Julie Delpy revolve around kinship, identity and coincidence.

Blind Chance

The second part of Kieslowski’s overwhelming trilogy about freedom, equality and brotherhood is a black comedy dominated by the colour white. A Polish hairdresser seeks revenge after his wife (Julie Delpy) dumps him. Won a Silver Bear in Berlin.

Karol ends up in the streets of Paris with no money and no passport. Everything seems lost until he meets another Pole who ingeniously smuggles him back to Warsaw in a suitcase. There Karol is determined to get revenge on his ex-wife.

Trois Couleurs: Rouge was the final film shot by great director Krzysztof Kieslowski, who died in 1996. Jean-Louis Trintignant and Irène Jacob star as the grumpy former judge and the young model who unexpectedly become friends. 4K restoration.
