Branded to Kill

Seijun Suzuki / JP, 1967

When the Japanese New Wave bad boy Seijun Suzuki showed this bizarre, hilarious and visually overpowering masterpiece to the film studio bosses, he got thrown out on the spot. Nowadays this cool bit of Japanese cinema is regarded as the epitome of Suzuki’s sixties Pop Art aesthetics. The film is screened as part of EYE’s Japan programme – a retrospective of 90 years of Japanese cinema –  running until December this year.
