Breakfast on Pluto
Neil Jordan / IE, GB, 2005
‘A mix of fantasy, fairy tale and vaudeville’, is how Neil Jordan described his account of the adventures of the young transvestite Kitten in Northern-Ireland and London in the sixties and seventies. Kitten preserves his innocence in a world fast descending into political chaos and violence. Shown as part of The Gaze, a series focusing on films that are or were important in the LGBT scene.
Kitten is a transvestite from Northern Ireland. A flamboyant nightlife raver, she”s oblivious to the aggression between Catholics and Protestants and the violent response by the British to IRA attacks. Kitten wants to live her life as in a candy-coloured pop song and forget herself in the glitter and glamour of the clubbing scene. “Everyone”s so serious”, is her repeated complaint.Director Neil Jordan turned Pat McCabe”s novel of the same name into a massively appealing film and found suitable music for virtually every scene. The result is a true feast for eyes and ears, with songs in the soundtrack like How Much is That Doggy in the Window by Patti Page, the Windmills of your Mind by Dusty Springfield and Children of the Revolution by T. Rex. Supporting roles are played by no less a person than Gavin Friday (founder of the outrageous Virgin Prunes), Bryan Ferry (“Mr. Silky String”) and Liam Neeson (as a priest).Free prosecco after the performance.
