Kira Moeratova / SUHH, 1967 / 96 min.
Kira Muratova’s second feature film sketches a portrait of Maxim – a free-spirited, polyamorous intellectual criss-crossing the Soviet Union as a geologist. A classic from the period known as the ‘Thaw’, when the Soviet authorities relaxed their grip on power a little.

With the war in Ukraine and harsh repression meted out by Putin, Russia seems to be returning to the dictatorial era of Stalin, with a contemporary twist. Unlike in the late 1950s and early ’60s, when Nikita Khrushchev created space for political reforms, and the cultural climate became (relatively) more liberal.
