Brief Encounters

Kira Moeratova / SUHH, 1967 / 96 min.

Kira Muratova’s second feature film sketches a portrait of Maxim – a free-spirited, polyamorous intellectual criss-crossing the Soviet Union as a geologist. A classic from the period known as the ‘Thaw’, when the Soviet authorities relaxed their grip on power a little.

poster Brief Encounters (Kira Muratova, SU 1967)
With the war in Ukraine and harsh repression meted out by Putin, Russia seems to be returning to the dictatorial era of Stalin, with a contemporary twist.
