Whispers of the Night
Architectures of Intimacy: Whispers of the Night
Nocturnal programme transporting you from a mysterious train ride (Night Train) to a hotel lobby at night (Nightshift).

During the nighttime, we experience the world differently. When it gets dark, we enter a liminal space, a hazy dreamlike realm, as if the people that are still awake at night share an intimate secret together. These two films balance on the threshold between sleep and wakefulness, conjuring a nocturnal state of mind. A dreamy, spellbinding ode to nighthawks and night workers.
The programme will be introduced by Kato van der Speeten, curator of Architectures of Intimacy.
Programme

Night Train (Kaori Oda, BA/JP 2021, 10’)
Night Train takes us on a somnambulant train journey in a snowy landscape, where the minds of the nocturnal travellers seem to wander into dreams, blurring reality and slowing and stretching time. A train runs in the dark. Goldfish drift in the dreams of the passengers.

Nightshift (Robina Rose, GB 1981, 68’)
Over the course of a single night shift, a West London hotel clerk plays silent witness to a nocturnal constellation of guests ranging from punk rockers and scenester magicians to seemingly staid businessmen and old-world gentry. As the hours march deeper into night and the varied clientele depart the waking world, the hotel transforms into an otherworldly, liminal space swaying between the everyday and the enchanting.
Nightshift, featuring punk icon Jordan and an enchanting soundtrack by Penguin Cafe Orchestra, was digitally restored in 4K on behalf of Lightbox Film Center (Philadelphia) in collaboration with the British Film Institute and Cinenova. Restoration funding was provided by Ron and Suzanne Naples.
16 through 18 July, Kato van der Speeten will also present the dreamy, poetic virtual reality experience In the Mist.
In collaboration with art cooperative Espacio Estamos Bien, an installation will be presented in the bathrooms near the box office, which will be festively opened on 16 July at 20:30.
