Carlos Casas / FR, GB, PL, UZ, 2019 / 85 min.

Fuelled by fables about a mythical elephant graveyard, a group of poachers closely follows Nga, an old elephant and probably the last of its kind. Throughout his life he has been taken care of by Sanra, an elephant driver (or ‘mahout’), who traditionally looks after just one animal his whole life. The poachers die one after another under mysterious circumstances, while the viewer becomes the protagonist on a journey into the elephant graveyard and beyond. The adventure film then unfolds into an experimental cinematic experience, as the quest transitions through stages of death, and images begin to fall away, abandoning the viewer to a rich sonic landscape.

Director Casas” previous work illustrates how he has always been attracted to environments of the most extreme kind, from the Aral Sea via Patagonia to the whales in the Bering Sea. With Cemetery he also bridges different time regimes: from the documentary via the fantastic to the mythic realm. (IFFR)
