Cinema Egzotik: Buddy Night

They can’t stand the sight of each other but when the going gets tough they prove to be a winning team: it’s the stuff of the buddy film. Cinema Egzotik proudly presents two archetypal specimens, starring Robert de Niro, Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy in the lead roles.

Buddy night

Egzotik programmer Martin Koolhoven explains. “In the 1980s they were churned out by the dozens: buddy films like the Lethal Weapon series, Running Scared, Stake Out, Tango & Cash, Red Heat and oh so many more. Of course there had been predecessors, including Freebie and the Bean and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, but it was 48 Hrs. that really set it all off in 1982. Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy rocked and provided Hollywood with a cast-iron formula. The absolute highlight of the genre is Buddy Night”s second film: Midnight Run. It also happens to be Robert de Niro”s best performance ever. His partner is the truly amazing Charles Grodin. Those two should have been given an Oscar.”

48 Hrs. Walter Hill (United States 1982)92 min.Don”t miss 48 Hrs. if you want to see Eddie Murphy getting the better of a bar full of beer-guzzling rednecks. Murphy is Reggie “fast talkin”” Hammond, a convicted thief who teams up with cranky detective Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) for two full days. The lines Nolte and Murphy exchange are unforgettable, the fight scenes are copious – as we can expect from Walter Hill (Hard Times, Southern Comfort).+Midnight runMartin Brest (United States 1988)126 min.A bounty hunter (Robert De Niro) has to bring a former mafia accountant who embezzled 15 million dollars (Charles Grodin) from New York to Los Angeles. The two grow on each other as they travel west. Beverly Hills Cop director Martin Brest shows how to make a light-hearted action film that doesn”t neglect the characters. The film was nominated for several Golden Globes, including one for De Niro's acting performance.
