Kate, a diner waitress, is lonely and unhappy in the huge metropolis and dreams of a rural life. Once is married, she returns to a farm in a tornado of violence and abuse. Murnau paints a detailed picture, full of strong emotions, of life in the American mid-west during the Great Depression.
