Collective
Alexander Nanau / RO, LU, 2019 / 109 min.
On 30 October 2015 a fire at the Colectiv night club in Bucharest claimed 28 victims. In the days and weeks that were to follow, a further 37 of the 180 injured died from bacterial infections. This was not a terrible coincidence. The documentary Collective reveals how a pharmaceutical company could do as it pleased as corrupt government agencies and hospital managers turned a blind eye.

It started with a fire at a nightclub that didn’t even meet the minimum safety requirements. Researching the subject, director Alexander Nanau unearthed even more disturbing facts. His contact with a sports newspapers’ journalist who uncovered the truth about the 37 victims was decisive. The burns proved to have been treated with a disinfectant that had been illegally diluted by the manufacturer. And even the doctors weren’t blameless.
