Coma
Sara Fattahi / SY, LB, 2015 / 98 min.
This documentary shows three generations of Syrian women going quietly and independently about their daily tasks in a Damascus apartment. As their country slowly sinks into a coma, their emotions and memories remain intact and the women refuse to succumb to the desperation and destruction of war. The screening is followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.
Coma follows the lives of three generations of Syrian women. Their apartment is a microcosm amidst the ravages of war. Silhouettes, brief close-ups of faces and fragments of conversations reflect the paralysis of their lives, marked by feelings of fear that are evoked by the stories transmitted on radio and television.
Curator Donatella Della Ratta chose No Home Movie (2015) by the Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman as accompanying film to Coma. Akerman”s documentary about her mother”s last days is screened at 21.45.
