Daaaaaalí
Quentin Dupieux / FR, 2023 / 78 min.
Quentin Dupieux’s latest feature film is a neo-surrealist attempt to descend into Salvador Dalí’s mind – with equally disorienting and amusing results. A female journalist tries to interview the master of melting watches – with the emphasis on ‘tries’.
Much, if not anything is possible in Quentin Dupieux’s films. There is seldom a logical explanation for what happened. Do we really need one? For instance, a deerskin coat can have a life of its own (Deer Skin), a car tire can become homicidal (Rubber) and a large fly in the boot of a car can aid two losers in their attempt to rob a bank (Mandibules).
Preliminary film
Before Daaaaaali! you see the short absurdist film Tulips (3') from 1966 by Wim van der Linden. In this so-called 'sad movie' we see an almost motionless statue of a vase of tulips on a modern buffet.
