Dangerous Couples Night
Koolhoven & Simons: Dangerous Couples Night
Martin Koolhoven and Ronald Simons track down dangerous couples with as the feature film, True Romance on 35 mm, written by Quentin Tarantino. Preceded by an hour of excerpts and trailers that reveal how romance survives amid violence.
True Romance was written by Quentin Tarantino and he makes that very clear. The shy, lonely Elvis-loving comic book collector Clarence (Christian Slater) meets call girl Alabama (Patricia Arquette), his dream girl, during a triple bill of classic kung fu films at the local cinema. Violence soon erupts and the couple flee from both the cops and some gangsters.
Tarantino’s signature is all over this cocktail of ultra-violence, pulp poetry and grotesque criminals with music video aesthetics. Composer Hans Zimmer shamelessly stole his theme from Badlands (1974) and the unmoved voice-over refers to Terrence Malick’s debut. Also starring Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper and James Gandolfini.
Preceded by an hour of excerpts from and trailers for Sonny & Jed, Bonnie & Clyde, Badlands, Wild at Heart and Perdita Durango by Alex de Iglesia, in some ways the sequel to Wild at Heart, featuring the same types of characters.

Every month, Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinizing the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
