De kijk van Koolhoven: American Gangsters 2

Not really interested in dry lectures, but keen to learn everything there is to know about film? With his irresistible gift of the gab, presenter Martin Koolhoven takes us through the history of film. Martin himself will join us at Eye to watch all six episodes of the VPRO TV series De Kijk van Koolhoven on the big screen, in advance of the TV broadcast.

Every week Eye pre-premieres an episode of De Kijk van Koolhoven, in advance of the TV broadcast. After each episode, Martin Koolhoven introduces his film of choice to be screened this evening. Tonight: American Gangsters 2, with State of Grace as the main feature.

State of Grace (Phil Joanou, US 1990, 134')A bleak neo-noir with a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, evocatively shot by Blade Runner”s DOP Jordan Cronenweth (1935-1996). The Irish American Terry Noonan (Penn) returns to his former neighbourhood Hell”s Kitchen in NYC. His old pal Jackie (Oldman), now turned criminal, does not know Noonan is an undercover cop sent to infiltrate the local mafia.

Even though the episodes are longer this year, a single episode was not enough to cover this genre – and still films had to be left out. One of them is tonight”s great film of choice: State of Grace, a crime film by Phil Joanou Joanou featuring Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, Ed Harris, John Turturro and Burgess Meredith. A bleak neo-noir with a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, evocatively shot by Blade Runner”s DOP Jordan Cronenweth (1935-1996). The Irish American Terry Noonan (Penn) returns to his former neighbourhood Hell”s Kitchen in NYC. His old pal Jackie (Oldman), now turned criminal, does not know Noonan is an undercover cop sent to infiltrate the local mafia.

When Jackie takes out a few members of a rival Italian gang and is put on the family”s kill list, Terry gets drawn into a fatal spiral of violence. Loosely based on The Westies, a small and murderous crime gang of Irish Americans who operated out of West Manhattan in the 1960s and “70s. (VPRO)
