How wafer-thin the veneer of human civilization can be, is demonstrated in Tarr”s Werckmeister Harmonies, in which a circus arrives in a small Hungarian town. The inhabitants get carried away by a mysterious prince who drives the town into a collective frenzy of destruction.

The inhabitants stare in wonder at the circus” main attractions, such as the skeleton of a whale and a mysterious “Prince” who, like a true demagogue, tries to control the population. Some of them lose their grip on what”s happening, others try to cash in on the chaos that ensues.
