Many thousands of students applied to the conservatory in Beijing in 1978. There were places for 200 students. ‘Open Door’ politics had just brought a dramatic episode in Chinese history to its conclusion. Most of the students had zero cultural baggage. The successful composer Tan Dun, who nowadays lives in New York, had never even seen a violin before he was 20. He had only heard the compulsory model operas.

Prior to the documentary, the Taiwanese pianist Hua-Hsuan Lee will perform the 'Eight Memories in Watercolor' for piano solo by

Tan Dun
