Dekmantel Festival Conference
NL, 2023
Every year the Dekmantel Festival Conference offers a large discoursive programme at Eye Filmmuseum before the festival kicks off. Expect talks, screenings and workshops hosted by our friends from Resident Advisor. The whole day programme is free for all!

This edition we have both local and international artists on board sharing food for thought including Freddy K, Salome and Donato Dozzy. Come early on Thursday and join us in learning from these musical experts as well as film screenings.
Programme
12:00 - 14:00: RA broadcast journalist workshop
In this two-hour workshop, participants will join Resident Advisor's Senior Producer, Chloe Lula, to learn about how to make a podcast in a media environment that increasingly favors multimedia formats. They will learn the basics of audio production and editing for broadcast, as well as how to come up with a compelling story for the air and write a podcast script. By the end of the workshop, participants should have a working understanding of how to put together a podcast themselves. RA will also partner with a local community radio station to air one episode that comes from this workshop. Participants should come equipped with a topic they would like to explore in a podcast that we can talk about together.

14:00 - 15:30: Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande
After an award winning global festival tour last year, music documentary Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande will be screened during Dekmantel Festival Aan Het IJ. The British group Cymande are unsung heroes whose message of peace, love and funk sailed beyond Britain's shores and helped shape music for over five decades.
14:30 - 16:30: Production workshop: Martyn
On Martyn / 3024's session we will be focusing on the producers and musicians in our community with a 'Work in Progress Session'. After a short intro, we'll be listening to a handful of tracks provided by you ahead of the workshop. After each track we provide feedback and discuss how to progress it – all in order to get you motivated to finish your music. Not a producer or not ready yet to submit music? Come anyway! It's a great way to listen to what people are making, see who is who and to pick up ideas and tips for your own music or other ventures! The level of production is not important so don't be shy - it makes the sessions more fun if the submitted songs are in different 'stages'.

16:00 - 17:00: RA Exchange w/ Salome
The RA Exchange is a monthly series in which we invite artists, labels, promoters and other players who are shaping the electronic music landscape to engage in an open conversation about their career so far, the shapeshifting nature of dance music and anything else that the discussion happens upon. In this Exchange, Amsterdam-based journalist Souhayla Ou-Oumar will chat with Herrensauna resident Salome.
16:45 - 18:15: Production workshop: Ikonika
London-based and Hyperdub affiliated artist Ikonika joins us for a production workshop. This workshop is aimed at people at all levels. We will be using Ableton 11, however this will be beneficial for whatever DAW producers are using. For this workshop Ikonika will focus on creative workflow in and out of the studio – as she has an incredibly busy life juggling motherhood, music production and touring, it's essential to always be on point, without suffering from creative ‘blocks’. We'll be running through how Ikonika organises her library and templates, so she can start creating instantly. She will also be talking about what she does outside the studio in order to stay on top of projects and feel inspired.

17:30 - 18:30: Art of DJing Live w/ Freddy K
The Art of DJing is one of RA's flagship feature series, where an artist chats through their techniques, style, gear and all the tips and tricks that make their sets unique and impactful. In this special live edition, one of techno’s favourite DJs, Freddy K, will unpack his craft. The talk is hosted by Chloe Lula.
18:30 - 20:00: Label workshop TraTraTrax
TraTraTrax in retrospective: gestation and development of a label pushing the hybridization of sounds. They will explore the history and rapid rise of TraTraTrax from the voice of the A&R and one of its artists, but also, in parallel, they will deliver the methodology used for attendees to leave with the necessary resources to create a label or collective that responds to the needs of a particular community.

19:00 - 20:00: Playing Favourites: Donato Dozzy
Playing Favourites is a flagship RA feature format in which we invite artists to speak about some of their favourite records in their collections. For this special live edition hosted at Dekmantel Festival, Italian techno maestro Donato Dozzy will step up for an exclusive listening session. The talk is hosted by Whitney Wei.

21:00 - 22:15: Live film score: La planète sauvage
The allegorical story, about humans living on a strange planet dominated by giant humanoid aliens who consider them animals, is based on the 1957 novel Oms en série by French writer Stefan Wul. The soundtrack for the film itself became one of the most influential film scores of all time and was composed by Alain Goraguer. In the Summer of 2021, composer Nitai Hershkovits was asked to rewrite the original score and performed with the Israeli Chamber Orchestra. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the film, Dekmantel Festival presents a new and synth-driven version of the live score in close collaboration with Eye Filmmuseum and L'Institut Francais.
