Desiree Pfenninger : In close proximity - translating an embodied female history in film

Keep an Eye 2023: Desiree Pfenninger

In this lecture performance, the filmmaker invites us into her process of filmmaking based on the embodiment of a story.

The stories of the women who came before us are inscribed in our bodies.

'In close proximity' is a research project to understand how our relationships are shaped by past events and how the inscriptions of the body can be translated back into images. In a lecture-performance comprised of documentary images and scene readings, filmmaker Desiree Pfenninger shares her method of working with her own body, her mother's body and her child's body, their relationships and histories in front of the camera and how she transforms this material back into fictional scenes. With this process of filmmaking based on the embodiment of a story, hidden female narratives become visible in film images and methods of feature film production are questioned.

Part of the Artistic Research Week: researchers of the Master of Film at the Nederlandse Filmacademie present their final exam work.
