The credit for making the first ever feature-length animated film goes to Lotte Reininger, one of the forgotten female directors of the Weimar Republic. Based around the fables from The Thousand and One Nights, with live musical accompaniment from Esat Ekincioglu (contrabass), Hamid Reza Behzadian (Indian guitar, lapsteel, mouth organ) en Steven Kamperman (alto clarinet, percussion, melodica, compositions).
No one knows exactly how, but the fact is that Prince Achmed, mounted on a fiery magic horse, lands on the island Wak Wak. There, he immediately falls for the beautiful fairy Pari Banu. But yet another character from The Thousand and One Nights, evil magician Abanazar, soon throws a spanner in the works.
